January 2026 Newsletter

Our next Full Parish Council meeting will be held on Monday 12th January 2026 at 7.30pm in the village hall all are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Local Government Reorganisation (LGR)
The Government has recently written to Surrey’s district and borough councils confirming plans to introduce unitary government. Under these proposals, the eastern area of Surrey—currently comprising Mole Valley, Reigate & Banstead, Tandridge, Epsom & Ewell and Elmbridge—will be combined to form a single new East Surrey Council, which will replace both the district/borough councils and Surrey County Council in this area from April 2027.

As a parish within Mole Valley, Newdigate will fall under the new East Surrey Council once the reorganisation takes effect. Newdigate is currently represented on Mole Valley District Council by Dineke van den Bogerd, Kirsty Havard and Jo Farrar-Astrop, and on Surrey County Council by Helyn Clack, the County Councillor for the Dorking Rural division.

Elections for the new unitary authorities will take place on Thursday 7 May 2026. These elections will establish a “shadow authority” for East Surrey Council, with members elected in two-councillor wards. The shadow authority will operate alongside existing councils until the new unitary arrangements come fully into effect in April 2027.

Winter Time!
Please remember the seasonal duties of trimming of hedges (especially if they reduce the width of public pavements) and ditch clearing. A reminder that ditches are for water only, not garden waste.

We have had a complaint that a footpath located centrally in the village is now rather narrow and is making it nearly impossible for pushchairs to navigate safely without going onto the road. Can we ask that all residents check any hedges outside their properties and if you are unable to carry out essential works please do get in touch and we will assist wherever we can.

Emergency First Aid & CPR Session
A big thank you must go to our two amazing First Aiders who ran our Emergency First Aid session for residents on Saturday 13th December 2025. It was very well attended and attendees said that they learned a great deal which will give them confidence if they were ever faced with an emergency situation at home or whilst out and about.
